As the number of coronavirus cases in the state is increasing, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray announced on Friday that gyms, malls, cinema halls, auditoriums and swimming pools in major metros would be closed from tomorrow.
Decisions are being taken to stop the spread of COVID-19 in Maharashtra, which has seen 14 coronavirus cases so far.
"All gyms, malls, cinema halls, auditoriums, and Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Pune and Pimpri will be closed to prevent the spread of coronavirus in Chinchwad," Uddhav Thackeray told the assembly today. Effective from midnight and effective till March 31, 2020.
Officials said there is large public participation in all affected establishments, which could increase the number of people infected.
The CM has also urged citizens to refrain from traveling by train or bus if it can be helped.
In addition, schools in Pimpri Chinchwad and Pune have been told to remain closed. However, SSC and HSC examinations are expected to continue per schedule. Meanwhile, no decision has yet been taken for schools in Mumbai.
Earlier this week, Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope also said that the Cabinet has decided that the Indian Premier League (IPL) be either postponed or played behind closed doors for the same reason.
As of Friday morning, a total number of COVID-19 cases have been reported in Maharashtra at 14, including nine from Pune, three from Mumbai, one from Thane and another from Nagpur.
